Ferry across the Mersey; Liverpool; & Port Sunlight – Monday 29th April
One of the best views you will get of the city of Liverpool is from the River Mersey (especially of the Liver Birds Building) which is why we are going to ‘Ferry across the Mersey’ from Birkenhead to Albert Docks (weather permitting). After our ‘cruise’ we will be dropped off at Albert Docks for just over two hours. From here you can head straight for the main shops, which are just a few minutes away; take an open top bus ride around the city; visit the World Museum of Liverpool (about 10 minutes’ walk from the Docks); or explore the very interesting historical dockland area where you will find the Museum of Liverpool at Pier Head and the Tourist Information Centre – as well as plenty of places to eat and drink. These are just a few ideas. The choice is yours.
By popular demand, on the way home we will call at Port Sunlight for two and a half hours. On arrival, a guide from the Museum will join us on the coach for an optional tour of this fascinating village. The circular tour will last about an hour. During the tour we will see some of the most exciting village architecture of the 19th Century set on delightful tree- lined roads. We will learn something about what it was like to live in the village for the factory workers and village residents known as ‘Sunlighters’.
There are plenty of places to eat and drink: the Art Gallery tea shop; the Port Sunlight Café; or the very nice café in the nearby Garden Centre and shop. After the tour enjoy a walk around the area or visit the Lady Lever Art Gallery, where there are paintings by Rossetti, Leighton and other Pre-Raphaelite artists, and also sculpture and pottery. The Museum is well-worth a visit, too, but there is a charge for this (not included in the price). Another possible extra is a guided tour of the ground and top floor of the Liver Building . More information about this when it is available.
The total cost of the trip is £44.50 per person. This includes all coach travel, ferry, guided coach tour of Port Sunlight (but not entrance to Port Sunlight Museum or Liver Building). Please send a £15 non-refundable deposit per person when booking. The coach will leave Shrewsbury at approximately 9am and return about 6.30pm. The exact timings will be confirmed 7 days before travel.
